Surah Qamar — The Moon

ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ 54:1

Iqtarabati assaAAatu wanshaqqaalqamar

The hour drew nigh and the moon was rent in twain.

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ 54:2

Wa-in yaraw ayatan yuAAridoowayaqooloo sihrun mustamirr

And if they behold a portent they turn away and say: Prolonged illusion.

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ 54:3

Wakaththaboo wattabaAAoo ahwaahumwakullu amrin mustaqirr

They denied (the Truth) and followed their own lusts. Yet everything will come to a decision

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ 54:4

Walaqad jaahum mina al-anba-i mafeehi muzdajar

And surely there hath come unto them news whereof the purport should deter,

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ 54:5

Hikmatun balighatun famatughnee annuthur

Effective wisdom; but warnings avail not.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ 54:6

Fatawalla AAanhum yawma yadAAu addaAAiila shay-in nukur

So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) on the day when the Summoner summoneth unto a painful thing.

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ 54:7

KhushshaAAan absaruhum yakhrujoonamina al-ajdathi kaannahum jaradun muntashir

With downcast eyes, they come forth from the graves as they were locusts spread abroad,

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ 54:8

MuhtiAAeena ila addaAAiyaqoolu alkafiroona hatha yawmun AAasir

Hastening toward the summoner; the disbelievers say: This is a hard day.

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ 54:9

Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohinfakaththaboo AAabdana waqaloo majnoonun wazdujir

The folk of Noah denied before them, yea, they denied Our slave and said: A madman; and he was repulsed.

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ 54:10

FadaAAa rabbahu annee maghloobun fantasir

So he cried unto his Lord, saying: I am vanquished, so give help.

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ 54:11

Fafatahna abwaba assama-ibima-in munhamir

Then opened We the gates of heaven with pouring water

وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ 54:12

Wafajjarna al-arda AAuyoonanfaltaqa almao AAala amrin qad qudir

And caused the earth to gush forth springs, so that the waters met for a predestined purpose.

وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ 54:13

Wahamalnahu AAala thatialwahin wadusur

And We carried him upon a thing of planks and nails,

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ 54:14

Tajree bi-aAAyunina jazaanliman kana kufir

That ran (upon the waters) in Our sight, as a reward for him who was rejected.

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:15

Walaqad taraknaha ayatanfahal min muddakir

And verily We left it as a token; but is there any that remembereth?

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:16

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthur

Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:17

Walaqad yassarna alqur-ana liththikrifahal min muddakir

And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:18

Kaththabat AAadun fakayfa kanaAAathabee wanuthur

(The tribe of) A'ad rejected warnings. Then how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ 54:19

Inna arsalna AAalayhim reehansarsaran fee yawmi nahsin mustamirr

Lo! We let loose on them a raging wind on a day of constant calamity,

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ 54:20

TanziAAu annasa kaannahumaAAjazu nakhlin munqaAAir

Sweeping men away as though they were uprooted trunks of palm-trees.

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:21

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthur

Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:22

Walaqad yassarna alqur-ana liththikrifahal min muddakir

And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ 54:23

Kaththabat thamoodu binnuthur

(The tribe of) Thamud rejected warnings

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ 54:24

Faqaloo abasharan minna wahidannattabiAAuhu inna ithan lafee dalalinwasuAAur

For they said; Is it a mortal man, alone among us, that we are to follow? Then indeed we should fall into error and madness.

أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ 54:25

Aolqiya aththikru AAalayhimin baynina bal huwa kaththabun ashir

Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ 54:26

SayaAAlamoona ghadan mani alkaththabual-ashir

(Unto their warner it was said): To-morrow they will know who is the rash liar.

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ 54:27

Inna mursiloo annaqatifitnatan lahum fartaqibhum wastabir

Lo! We are sending the she-camel as a test for them; so watch them and have patience;

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ 54:28

Wanabbi/hum anna almaa qismatunbaynahum kullu shirbin muhtadar

And inform them that the water is to be shared between (her and) them. Every drinking will be witnessed.

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ 54:29

Fanadaw sahibahum fataAAatafaAAaqar

But they call their comrade and he took and hamstrung (her).

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:30

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthur

Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ 54:31

Inna arsalna AAalayhim sayhatanwahidatan fakanoo kahasheemi almuhtathir

Lo! We sent upon them one Shout, and they became as the dry twigs (rejected by) the builder of a cattle-fold.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:32

Walaqad yassarna alqur-ana liththikrifahal min muddakir

And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ 54:33

Kaththabat qawmu lootin binnuthur

The folk of Lot rejected warnings.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ 54:34

Inna arsalna AAalayhim hasibanilla ala lootin najjaynahum bisahar

Lo! We sent a storm of stones upon them (all) save the family of Lot, whom We rescued in the last watch of the night,

نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ 54:35

NiAAmatan min AAindina kathalikanajzee man shakar

As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who giveth thanks.

وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ 54:36

Walaqad antharahum batshatanafatamaraw binnuthur

And he indeed had warned them of Our blow, but they did doubt the warnings.

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:37

Walaqad rawadoohu AAan dayfihifatamasna aAAyunahum fathooqoo AAathabeewanuthur

They even asked of him his guests for an ill purpose. Then We blinded their eyes (and said): Taste now My punishment after My warnings!

وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ 54:38

Walaqad sabbahahum bukratanAAathabun mustaqirr

And in truth the punishment decreed befell them early in the morning.

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ 54:39

Fathooqoo AAathabee wanuthur

Now taste My punishment after My warnings!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:40

Walaqad yassarna alqur-ana liththikrifahal min muddakir

And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ 54:41

Walaqad jaa ala firAAawna annuthur

And warnings came in truth unto the house of Pharaoh

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ 54:42

Kaththaboo bi-ayatinakulliha faakhathnahum akhthaAAazeezin muqtadir

Who denied Our revelations, every one. Therefore We grasped them with the grasp of the Mighty, the Powerful.

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ 54:43

Akuffarukum khayrun min ola-ikumam lakum baraatun fee azzubur

Are your disbelievers better than those, or have ye some immunity in the scriptures?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ 54:44

Am yaqooloona nahnu jameeAAun muntasir

Or say they: We are a host victorious?

سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ 54:45

Sayuhzamu aljamAAu wayuwalloona addubur

The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee.

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ 54:46

Bali assaAAatu mawAAiduhum wassaAAatuadha waamar

Nay, but the Hour (of doom) is their appointed tryst, and the Hour will be more wretched and more bitter (than their earthly failure).

إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ 54:47

Inna almujrimeena fee dalalinwasuAAur

Lo! the guilty are in error and madness.

يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ 54:48

Yawma yushaboona fee annariAAala wujoohihim thooqoo massa saqar

On the day when they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces (it is said unto them): Feel the touch of hell.

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ 54:49

Inna kulla shay-in khalaqnahubiqadar

Lo! We have created every thing by measure.

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ 54:50

Wama amruna illa wahidatunkalamhin bilbasar

And Our commandment is but one (commandment), as the twinkling of an eye.

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ 54:51

Walaqad ahlakna ashyaAAakumfahal min muddakir

And verily We have destroyed your fellows; but is there any that remembereth?

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ 54:52

Wakullu shay-in faAAaloohu fee azzubur

And every thing they did is in the scriptures,

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ 54:53

Wakullu sagheerin wakabeerin mustatar

And every small and great thing is recorded.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ 54:54

Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwanahar

Lo! the righteous will dwell among gardens and rivers,

فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ 54:55

Fee maqAAadi sidqin AAinda maleekinmuqtadir

Firmly established in the favour of a Mighty King.
