Privacy policy

Nur collects nothing about you. There is no account to make, no analytics, no advertising and no cookies, and nothing you read is reported anywhere.

This page exists because app stores require one, and because a promise worth making is worth writing down. It applies to the website at nur-e-quran.com and to the Android app built from the same code.

What is stored, and where

Your settings, your bookmarks and your last-read position are held by your own device, under three keys and no more. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing the app’s data removes all of it permanently — there is no copy anywhere else to restore from.

If you use prayer times, the coordinates you allow or type are stored the same way. The whole calculation — times, qibla, the Hijri date and the time zone your coordinates fall in — happens on the device, so there is nothing to send.

Location

Location is optional and is used for one thing: working out prayer times and the direction of the qibla. It is requested only when you open the Times page or press the button there, never on launch, and the app asks for coarse location only — enough to know which city you are in, not which building.

You can decline it entirely and type coordinates by hand instead. There is no city search, because a city search would mean sending what you typed to somebody’s server.

Notifications

Prayer alerts are off until you turn them on. In the Android app they are scheduled by the operating system on your device, from times calculated on your device — no server is involved at any point.

On the website there is one additional, separate option: being notified when the browser is fully closed. A website cannot wake itself, so that needs a scheduler that knows when your prayers are. It is off by default, it states its cost before its switch, and what it sends is an approximate position rounded to about a kilometre, your calculation method, and which prayers you want — no name, no account, no identifier, and nothing about what you read. Turning it off deletes the record.

What the app connects to

In normal use Nur contacts these hosts and no others:

• api.quran.com — verses, translations and commentary.
• verses.quran.com and mirrors.quranicaudio.com — recitation audio.
• cdn.jsdelivr.net — the 99 Names recitation and the adhan, which are streamed rather than bundled for licensing reasons.

None of those requests carries anything identifying you: no account, no device id, no cookie and no location. This is not a promise made in prose alone — a test in the project records every outbound request the app makes and fails if a host outside that list appears, if any request carries a body, or if a coordinate turns up in a URL or a header.

The Android app bundles the Arabic text, the Pickthall translation and the transliteration for all 6,236 verses, so reading and prayer times work with no connection at all.

Children

Nur is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anybody, including children.

Changes, and getting in touch

If this policy ever changes, the change will appear on this page. Since nothing is collected there is nothing to request, correct or delete — but if you want to ask about any of it, write to nurequran.app@gmail.com, which is the same address the Play listing carries.
